Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Social media has revolutionized the way people communicate, mobilize, and express their opinions, particularly in the context of political and social movements. Platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp have become crucial tools for citizens to voice their concerns, organize protests, and challenge government policies. The Endbadgovernance protest, which began in Nigeria in July 2024, provides a compelling case study for analyzing how social media comments reflect and influence public sentiment towards government policies. The Endbadgovernance protest emerged as a response to a combination of economic hardships, rising costs of living, and perceived failures in governance. Sparked by the removal of fuel subsidies and the resultant surge in fuel prices, the protest quickly grew into a nationwide movement demanding reforms and accountability. The protest saw significant activity on social media, where citizens used these platforms to organize, share information, and express their grievances.

Social media platforms played a pivotal role in the organization and dissemination of information related to the Endbadgovernance protest. They provided a space for protesters to voice their frustrations, mobilize support, and spread awareness about the issues at hand. Additionally, social media facilitated real-time updates on the protest's progress and the government's response, shaping the public's perception and understanding of the events. Public sentiment towards government policies can be profoundly influenced by how these policies are portrayed and discussed on social media. The Endbadgovernance protest illustrates how social media comments can reflect and amplify public dissatisfaction with government actions. Analyzing these comments provides insights into the public's perception of government policies, the effectiveness of communication strategies, and the impact of digital platforms on political discourse. This study aims to analyze social media comments to understand how public sentiment towards government policies was portrayed during the Endbadgovernance protest. By examining the nature of these comments, the study seeks to uncover patterns of public opinion, identify key concerns and demands, and assess the overall impact of social media on the protest's narrative.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

The Endbadgovernance protest highlighted significant public dissatisfaction with government policies in Nigeria, particularly regarding economic issues and governance failures. Social media played a crucial role in shaping and reflecting this dissatisfaction. However, there is a need for a detailed analysis of how social media comments portrayed public sentiment towards government policies during the protest. This analysis will provide insights into the effectiveness of social media as a tool for political expression and its impact on public perception and policy discourse.

The problem at the core of this study is understanding the relationship between social media comments and public sentiment towards government policies during the Endbadgovernance protest. This involves examining the content and tone of social media comments, identifying prevailing themes and concerns, and assessing how these comments influenced or reflected public opinion and protest dynamics.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

  1. To analyze the content and tone of social media comments related to the Endbadgovernance protest and assess how they reflect public sentiment towards government policies.
  2. To identify key themes and concerns expressed in social media comments about the government's handling of economic issues and governance failures.
  3. To evaluate the impact of social media comments on the public's perception of government policies and the overall narrative of the Endbadgovernance protest.

1.4 Research Questions

  1. What is the nature and tone of social media comments related to the Endbadgovernance protest, and how do they reflect public sentiment towards government policies?
  2. What are the key themes and concerns expressed in social media comments about the government's handling of economic issues and governance failures during the protest?
  3. How have social media comments influenced public perception of government policies and the overall narrative of the Endbadgovernance protest?

1.5 Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it provides a comprehensive analysis of how social media comments shaped and reflected public sentiment towards government policies during the Endbadgovernance protest. By examining the content and tone of these comments, the study offers valuable insights into the role of social media in political discourse and public opinion formation. The findings are relevant for policymakers, political analysts, and scholars interested in understanding the dynamics of social media and its impact on governance and protest movements. The study also contributes to the broader discourse on the effectiveness of social media as a tool for political expression and mobilization. It highlights the ways in which digital platforms can amplify public grievances, influence policy debates, and shape the overall narrative of social movements.

1.6 Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The scope of this study is focused on analyzing social media comments related to the Endbadgovernance protest in Nigeria. The study examines comments from various platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, to understand public sentiment towards government policies. It covers the period from the onset of the protest in July 2024 to its aftermath.

The study is delimited by its reliance on secondary data, including publicly available social media comments and related content. It does not include a survey of social media users or direct interviews with participants. Additionally, the study focuses on social media comments and may not fully capture other forms of public sentiment or offline expressions of opinion.
